Big Hit's acquisition: What do you need to know about the relationship of the 'sibling' companies - Big Hit and Source Music

Big Hit Entertainment has just announced over a press release today (31 Jul) that the company has acquired Source Music as part of a subsidiary under Big Hit. This news is no surprise to the fans of BTS and GFriend as both companies have strong ties since the formation of the boyband, 8eight in 2007 and GLAM under the management of Big Hit and Source Music in 2012.

Unfortunately, GLAM disbanded due to several reasons, including a member's scandal with all the members ending their contracts on January 15, 2015. It was on that same day that GFriend debuted with their first EP "Season of Glass". That said, other than the agency collaboration of creating GLAM, the relationship between Big Hit and Source Music has always been a mystery to many as zero to no interactions are made between the artists of the companies. Below are some interesting facts about Big Hit-Source Music which will be important to know, especially with the recent close managements of both agencies.

1. Big Hit CEO, Bang Shi-Hyuk and Source Music CEO, So Sung-Jin are known to be close friends
Derived from @hitmanb on Twitter

Firstly, in a Twitter post by CEO Bang himself on June 2017, the video shows both CEO Bang (left with the Iron-Man helmet) and CEO So (right with the lightsaber) having fun with each other and this clearly implies the close relationship between the both CEO representatives of the companies.

2. GFriend members who were previously Big Hit trainees

It was also known to many that GFriend SinB was previously a trainee under Big Hit where she was trained under the company since she was 12-13 years old. This was also the same with Eunha as she knew Sinbi prior to her preparations with Gfriend's debut in early 2015.

3. Similar production teams for both Big Hit and Source Music
Do you know that the choreography of GFriend's debut song "Glass Bead" was actually choreographed by the famed Big Hit choreographer and Performance Director, Son Seung Deuk who also did the dance routines of the various hit songs of BTS?

Do you also know that the music video director team, LUMPENS, who had directed BTS' music videos from Idol, Fake Love, Spring Day, DNA, is also the same director for GFriend's "Time for the Moon Light"?

4. What's in the future?
So, What does the acquisition of Source Music by Big Hit means for the K-pop industry? Will we see more subtle warped musical or visual music video concept between both the artists of the companies or will they make their name by becoming the new Big 3 companies of the Korean Wave? Leave your comments below if you know more interesting facts about them!
